At the request of the customer, third party checks would be conducted by SMRITHI on the completion of proper Erection of External and Internal parts of the ESP, the Funnel and Gas ducts on the mechanical front. The alignment between the Collecting and Emitting system would be checked with gauge for the right voltage distance. On the Electrical side, Rapping system, Switch gear panel, Auxiliary control panel and High voltage rectifier control panel would be checked with gadgets for ensuring the Electrical strength of the respective equipments involved. SMRITHI obligation included No-load test, open circuit test, Short circuit test and Still Air load test for ensuring the Mechanical and Electrical healthiness of the ESP fields.


The conditional assessment study is done at customer's call for ESPs, not performing to the satisfactory level due to ageing and other factors. Based on the order from customer, SMRITHI service Engineers visit the site and inspect the ESP field and record their findings in the Field Alignment and condition of various parts. Complete inspections of Electrical and Mechanical components/ Equipments will be conducted and recorded. With the above assessment, a detailed report will be submitted with our recommendation of spares required to replace and the rectification in the existing areas-a process towards rehabilitation.


The Erection of ESP is checked at five important stages. They are

  1. Checking and Acceptance of civil Foundations
  2. Bearing alignment, after erection of columns & Bracing.
  3. After Casing Erection up to Roof Beam & Insulator support panel.
  4. After Erecting Collecting Suspension & Emitting Frames
  5. Alignment of Collecting & Emitting Systems incl. Rapping
SMRITHI acts as a third party to ensure the correctness of the Erection in process. Every one of the stage inspection would be recorded and inspection report xsubmitted. This would enable timely correction which could avoid rework at a later state, thus avoiding any delay for timely commissioning of the ESP.


At the request of customers SMRITHI service Engineers would be deputed to site. A joint inspection of ESP fields along with customer Engineers will be made and recorded. Defects would be identified for correction requiring rectifications or replacement of the spares. The spares to be augmented would be advised to customer. Invariably, this is done prior to annual Overhaul.


Based on the Shut down Inspection and Augmentation of Spares, SMRITHI at the request from the customer can supervise over hauling work of ESP at site. A joint inspection of all fields would be carried out by SMRITHI & Customer and recorded. Necessary tools and tackles, spares, safety requirements are to be arranged by the customer along with work force. Depending on the number of days of over haul, SMRITHI assures that with correct spares and proper method in attending the shutdown, the performance would be improved both Mechanically & Electrically nearest to the original condition. All Tools & Tackles and Man power in needed to be engaged by the customer.


The velocity of gas flow in to the ESP is decided by the area of cross section of the ESP, its width & height. For a full loading of ESP, the flow across the ESP should be evenly distributed. The vital factor for performance of the ESP such as SCA and Treatment time are decided by the gas flow spread uniformly inside the ESP. This is ensured by the co-efficient of variation within 20% across ESP. The positioning of deflectors is done by a checking with Anemometer and Placement of deflector/throttles on the GD screens.


ESP is an Electro-mechanical Equipment, Tuning of ESP involves elaborate study. Only if the ESP system is mechanically aligned, we can ensure max Electrical input to it. Hence, the following activities are done as part of ESP tuning;

  1. Checking of Boiler operation which determines the input condition to ESP such as gas flow, gas temperature and dust concentration in fly ash.
  2. Dust evacuation-ash handling is checked for prevention of hopper chocking & overfilling of dust inside ESP.
  3. Electrically, tests such as Dummy load test, OC, SC tests are done to ensure healthiness of power and control equipments.
  4. Rapping & Heating systems are checked for working condition.
  5. Air load test & charging of ESP with tuning of Electrical panel and controllers.
All the above are indeed, part of the commissioning activities done initially when a new ESP was installed. We need to do this every time, an ESP is taken for overhaul, and putting the system back to service.
